Registering Delta Chat through Mail.ru

Set up Relay and a Mail.ru external app password to connect Delta Chat without giving the app your regular mailbox password.

Main idea

In Delta Chat, choose Use email as relay - this is Relay mode.
In Mail.ru, create a password for an external application.
In Delta Chat, enter the Mail.ru address and that password, not your regular mailbox password.

Remember

The regular Mail.ru password is needed only to sign in to Mail.ru and confirm the action. Do not enter it in Delta Chat.

The external app password is shown once: copy it immediately.

What you need

A phone with Delta Chat installed.
A Mail.ru mailbox you can access.
The regular Mail.ru password for confirmation inside Mail.ru.
The ability to open Mail.ru in a browser or app.

Recommended order

First create the external app password in Mail.ru.
Then open Delta Chat, choose Relay and paste that password.

If you are already at the Current password field in Delta Chat, switch to Mail.ru, create the password and return.

Part 1

Create an external app password in Mail.ru

Why this is needed

Delta Chat should not receive your regular mailbox password. Mail.ru issues a separate password for external applications. Use that password in Delta Chat.

Step 1

Open Password and security in Mail.ru

While signed in to Mail.ru, open the account menu.

Click the profile icon or account menu.
Select Password and security.

If the interface looks different, look for the account security settings.

Step 2

Go to passwords for external applications

The required block is in Mail.ru security settings.

Select Security in the side menu or account menu.
At the bottom of the sign-in methods block, click Passwords for external applications.

This does not change the main password. You are creating a separate password only for Delta Chat.

Step 3

Click Create

On the Passwords for external applications page, create a new password.

Find the External app password row.
Click Create.

Step 4

Enter a password name

Use a name you will recognize later.

You can enter Delta Chat, Delta or any convenient label.
Click Continue.

The name is not the password. It is only a label in Mail.ru settings.

Step 5

Select full Mail access

On the access setup screen, select access specifically to Mail.

Choose Full access to Mail - SMTP, IMAP, POP3.
Click Continue.

Do not choose only Cloud or Calendar access. Delta Chat needs Mail access.

Step 6

Confirm with the regular Mail.ru password

Mail.ru will ask for the main account password.

Enter the regular password you use to sign in to Mail.ru.
Click Confirm.

This is the only step where the regular Mail.ru password is needed. Later, Delta Chat uses the external app password instead.

Step 7

Copy the external app password

After confirmation, Mail.ru shows the ready password.

Click Copy.
Keep the password temporarily: you will need it in the last Delta Chat step.
After copying it, you can click Done.

If you close the window before copying the password, it cannot be viewed again. Create a new password the same way.

Part 2

Register Delta Chat through Relay

Main point in this part

In Delta Chat, choose Use email as relay. This is the Relay setup. In the password field, paste the Mail.ru external app password copied in Part 1.

Step 8

Open Delta Chat and create a new profile

Start registration in the Delta Chat app.

Tap the blue Create new profile button.

On the Delta Chat start screen, tap Create new profile.

Step 9

Enter a profile name

On the Your profile screen, fill in the name field.

Tap the Your name field.
Enter the employee name or work name.
A profile photo can be added later and is optional.

Enter the name your contacts will see.

Step 10

Choose Use another server

After entering the name, continuation options appear.

Do not use the default flow if you need Mail.ru Relay setup.
Tap Use another server.

This button opens Relay setup through your mailbox.

Step 11

Choose Relay: Use email as relay

This is the most important Delta Chat step.

Tap Use email as relay.
Do not choose the Chatmail server list if you need Mail.ru connection.
Do not choose Scan invitation code unless you have a separate invitation.

The correct option for this guide is Relay through email.

Step 12

Enter Mail.ru and the external app password

Return to Delta Chat and fill in the sign-in form.

In Email address, enter the full Mail.ru address, for example name@mail.ru.
In Current password, paste the external app password copied from Mail.ru.
Tap Log in.

Do not enter the regular Mail.ru password in Delta Chat. Only the external app password is needed.

Final check

An external app password has been created in Mail.ru.
Full access to Mail - SMTP, IMAP, POP3 - was selected.
The external app password has been copied.
Use email as relay was selected in Delta Chat.
The Mail.ru address and external app password were entered in Delta Chat.

If sign-in fails

Check that Delta Chat has the external app password, not the regular password.
Check that the Mail.ru address is complete and has no typos.
If the password does not work, create a new external app password in Mail.ru and try again.
Do not copy extra spaces before or after the password.
If Mail.ru asks for extra confirmation, confirm inside Mail.ru and repeat sign-in.

If an external app password is exposed to someone else, delete it in Mail.ru and create a new one.
